GOP megadonor Miriam Adelson is a pro-Israel hardliner who wants Trump to allow the annexation of the West Bank
Israeli-American billionaire and casino owner Miriam Adelson has become a kingmaker in conservative American politics, with her campaign donations almost guaranteeing victory for Republican candidates.
Adelson donated $100 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign. Now, all eyes are on Adelson and her potential influence on Trump’s future policy decisions, particularly on Israel.
Trump has promised to stop Israel’s wars in Gaza and Lebanon, but his statements regarding the war immediately shifted as soon as his campaign received the $100 million donation from Adelson.
Adelson, who has a net worth of more than $30 billion, has maintained a low profile throughout her life, often working out of the limelight and allowing her late husband to rise to national fame. But she reportedly played a crucial and influential role in growing the couple’s political course over the past few decades.
Miriam married casino magnate Sheldon Adelson in 1991. Decades later, he would become one of Trump’s most important financial supporters.
The Adelson couple came out in the 2010s as one of the biggest megadonors to the Republican Party, spending over $500 million on candidates in congressional, senate and presidential races.
Adelson has been supporting Trump since 2016
In 2015, Republican candidates joined the “Adelson primaries” in Las Vegas, where candidates would present their case for receiving a portion of the donation pie.
The Adelson couple was among Trump’s biggest supporters during his 2016 presidential bid, although they were not the first donors to support Trump’s cause.
They did not back Trump during the Republican primary, with Sheldon favoring Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Miriam favoring Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. At the time, Trump even criticized the Adelsons, accusing them of attempting to buy off Republican candidates.
Despite that, the Adelsons met with Trump in December 2015, and the focus of their conversation was Israel. Miriam said she found Trump to be “very charming.” After that meeting, their relationship strengthened, and the Adelsons ultimately became Trump’s leading supporters.
The couple gave $20 million to Trump’s 2016 campaign and donated over $38 million to Republican super PACs and congressional campaigns, as well as a $10 million contribution to the pro-Trump super PAC Future45.
Two years later, the Adelsons donated $113 million to Republican and conservative organizations and candidates during the 2018 midterm election cycle.
They also donated $5 million to Trump for his inauguration festivities and provided $500,000 to Trump’s legal defense fund while he was being investigated regarding allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The Adelsons’ support for Trump delivered concrete results, such as when Trump announced that the United States’ embassy in Israel would be relocated from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a key policy the Adelsons had been urging American presidents to do for over a decade.
Now, Miriam’s goal is for the president-elect to permit Israel to annex the occupied Palestinian West Bank. (Related: Miriam Adelson ‘wants West Bank annexation’ in return for $100M donation to Trump.)
Such a move would end any possibility of a peaceful solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, including ending any future for the two-state solution and a future contiguous Palestinian state in the West Bank.
