Kansas City Chiefs superstars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce had their homes burglarized just hours apart in early October before their Monday night matchup with the New Orleans Saints. Robbers took an estimated $100,000 in jewelry from Kelce’s home while they nabbed numerous items like jerseys, medals, trophies, awards, and designer handbags from the Mahomes household.

Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, was understandably frustrated:

Now police believe they know who was behind the caper: South American gangs. You don’t say?

It seems that the burglars behind the recent high-end thefts are part of a highly organized and intelligent crime ring.

Multiple sources have confirmed to FOX4 that police believe the culprits are members of a South American crime ring responsible for targeting high-profile homes. “This is a sophisticated operation. It’s not some guy that’s going down to the local pawn shop,” security expert Mike Barbieri said.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all that this crime spree that is going across the entire country is designed by some very sophisticated people in somewhat of a cartel,” he added.

Neither the immigration status nor the exact country of origin of the suspected gang members has been specified. Whoever they are, though, they’re no amateurs:

Barbieri emphasizes that the crimes committed by these South American criminals are the result of extensive planning, with weeks of intelligence gathering and potentially even inside work within the homes prior to the burglaries.

“Anybody that’s had their home worked on recently and then miraculously had it burglarized, you can draw a very interesting conclusion from that. Some of the people that were on the jobsite may know people in these cartels and may be selling the information,” Barbieri said.

There is no indication that these burglaries are connected to the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, but South American criminal syndicates are clearly becoming a big problem in the U.S.:

This story is not funny, and just because Mahomes and Kelce are wealthy and successful does not mean that they aren’t just as disturbed as you would or I would be by their homes being invaded and robbed. Hopefully, with the advent of the second Trump era and the renewed focus on crime—and Trump’s announcement that he’s picked the tough-talking Tom Homan to be his border czar, a man who wants to jettison foreign criminals from our homeland—stories like this will become rarer.

Back to seriousness now, though: gangs from South America have clearly become a major problem in the United States, and the time to deal with it is now. No one was killed here, but there have been multiple heartbreaking tragedies with far worse outcomes.
