Republicans moved to delay Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s rush to confirm the rest of the radical leftist judges nominated by Joe Biden before the party hands over control of the upper chamber.
Democrats were ready to burn the midnight oil on Monday to get their judges on the bench before the Thanksgiving break, turning the traditional lame-duck session into a mad rush to ensure that the most ideological administration in history will leave a long-lasting stamp on the federal judiciary.
On Monday, the New York City Democrat told colleagues on the Senate floor that Democrats “will keep working to confirm as many of President Biden’s judicial nominees as we can before the end of the year.”
But Senate Republicans aren’t going to play ball and just allow Schumer to bulldoze them after the American people have spoken by rebuking the power-drunk Democrats at the ballot box two weeks ago and “plotted procedural maneuvers on the Senate floor to significantly delay votes,” Fox News Digital reported, citing multiple sources.
“If Sen. Schumer thought Senate Republicans would just roll over and allow him to quickly confirm multiple Biden-appointed judges to lifetime jobs in the final weeks of the Democrat majority, he thought wrong,” newly elected GOP Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told Fox News Digital in a statement.
The Senate needs to move from legislative to executive session for cloture to be filed on a judge’s nomination which is typically done by unanimous consent but on Monday night, GOP Senators began to object to the requests for unanimous consent, requiring another vote on the transition between sessions and gumming up the works for Schumer by adding additional votes to the schedule.
“The judges we’ve confirmed represent perhaps the widest range of backgrounds and experiences ever seen under any president. We have more judges that worked as public defenders, legal aid attorneys, civil rights lawyers, federal prosecutors, voting rights lawyers, and more women and people of color than we’ve ever had under one Administration,” Schumer said of the 215 Biden judges that have already been confirmed.
“We’re going to confirm every possible federal judge in the lame duck session,” the Democrat-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee vowed in a post to X last week.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin (D-IL) said that Democrats could also hold votes for judges over the weekend and during the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks.
“I wouldn’t rule those out and Schumer has not ruled them out either,” Durbin told reporters. “I hope that the Republicans will at least be as cooperative with us as we were with them.”
President-elect Donald J. Trump urged Republican senators to hold the line against the further politicizing of the federal courts.
“Additionally, no Judges should be approved during this period of time because the Democrats are looking to ram through their Judges as the Republicans fight over Leadership. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. THANK YOU!,” Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social last week, weighing in on the race to replace Mitch McConnell as leader of the new Senate majority, a secret ballot won Thune.
