Donald Trump’s critics thought he wasn’t sufficiently pro-Ukraine, and he might cut off aid to that country, enabling a Russian victory. But Volodymyr Zelensky doesn’t see it that way:

President Zelensky has said the war in Ukraine will “end sooner” once Donald Trump becomes US president than it otherwise would have.

“It is certain that the war will end sooner with the policies of the team that will now lead the White House,” the Ukrainian leader said in an interview. “This is their approach, their promise to their citizens.”

Why will the war end sooner? I suppose because the Russians will take Trump seriously in a way they didn’t take the senile Joe Biden. Zelensky says he isn’t looking for a decisive battlefield victory:

He added that Ukraine “must do everything so that this war ends next year, ends through diplomatic means”.

That would be great, and I suspect Zelensky is right: Trump will help make it happen.

Zelensky says he had a good conversation with Trump, post-election:

Zelensky said on Friday that he had a “constructive exchange” with Trump during their phone conversation after Trump’s election victory, although US legislation prevents them from meeting ahead of Trump’s inauguration in January.

“I didn’t hear anything that goes against our position,” he told the Ukrainian media outlet Suspilne….

The U.S. has spent over $100 billion (estimates vary) on supporting Ukraine. It would be a real coup if Trump could broker an end to the war, in which more than 100,000 people have been killed, and turn off that spigot. It would be a nice start on Elon Musk’s project of cutting government spending.
