In the wake of November 5, some voters may be unsure how to deal with hostile types who voted against Trump. They might take a cue from A Streetcar Named Desire, casting themselves as Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando) with Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh) as Kamala Harris. The dialogue could go something like this:
I been on to you from the start and NOT ONCE did you pull the wool over this boy’s eyes! You come around here with your billion dollars and fancy celebrities, and lo and behold the place is turned into Hollywood. I say HA! HA! you hear me? HA! HA! HA!
Voters might also take direction from On the Waterfront, with Brando as Terry Malloy. Mob boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) has been bumping off longshoremen who stand up to his corrupt union. When Terry testifies to the crime commission, Friendly calls him a rat. Terry isn’t having it and voters could paraphrase his lines in this fashion:
You think you’re God Almighty but you know what you are? You’re a cheap, lousy, dirty stinking LOSER! And I’m glad what I done to you, ya hear that? I’M GLAD WHAT I DONE, and I’m gonna keep on doin’ it!
Mob goons attack Terry, who looks like he’s down for the count. “If Terry don’t work, we don’t work,” says a union brother. The bloodied fighter gets up and makes his way to the warehouse door, where the boss says “let’s get to work.”
With belligerent types, an actual speech from Dr. Strangelove might also apply. Group Captain Lionel Mandrake (Peter Sellers) thinks he has the code to recall the B-52s Gen. Jack Ripper (Sterling Heyden) has sent to bomb the Soviet Union. Col. “Bat” Guano (Keenan Wynn) won’t let Mandrake use the pay-phone, so the captain tells him:
If you don’t put that gun away and stop this stupid nonsense, the court of enquiry on this will give you such a pranging you’ll be lucky if you end up wearing the uniform of a bloody toilet attendant!
That could apply to people like Gen. Mark Milley, of Afghanistan and Chinese spy balloon fame. On a lighter note, voters might spot symbolism in Tootsie, from 1982.
On live television, Dorothy Michaels (Dustin Hoffman) suddenly reveals that he is not hospital administrator Emily Kimberly but actor Michael Dorsey. In 2024, the intersectional Kamala Harris was acting the part of Joe Biden, and also representing the composite character David Garrow profiled in Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama. The half-white resident of Martha’s Vineyard has now been denied a fourth term and the nation has a chance to become great again. So let’s get to work.
