All across the land, the call rings out for President Trump to repair the wreckage of Biden-Harris, and put an end to the “Obama Era.” As Elon and Vivek should know, the damage goes back much farther.
Back in 2004, Steve authored The Real Jimmy Carter: How Our Worst Ex-President Undermines American Foreign Policy, Coddles Dictators and Created the Party of Clinton and Kerry. To that time, the Georgia Democrat elected in 1976 was indeed the worst ex-president, and a strong contender for worst president as well. Allegedly concerned about government inefficiency, Carter proceeded to make it worse.
The federal Department of Education was a payoff to the National Education Association, which endorsed Carter’s run for president. Carter also backed the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, which created the Senior Executive Service, established to “ensure that the executive management of the Government of the United States is responsive to the needs, policies, and goals of the Nation and otherwise is of the highest quality.” In reality, it was all about money.
By 1981, few efficiency gains were evident but SES bosses were dissatisfied with their pay. Between 2008 and 2011, on top of their hefty salaries and benefits, the elitist bureaucrats bagged more than $340 million in bonuses, which were not subject to budget cuts. So it makes sense that the SES insignia is a gold keystone, and the agency boasts its own flag, a sign of power.
SES bosses “serve in the key positions just below the top Presidential appointees. SES members are the major link between these appointees and the rest of the Federal workforce. They operate and oversee nearly every government activity in approximately 75 Federal agencies.” These are basically zampolits, the equivalent of Soviet political officers. The President Formerly Known as Barry Soetoro (PFKBS) was a big fan.
“Strengthening the Senior Executive Service,” Obama’s 2015 executive order, sought to “facilitate career executive continuity between administrations.” He wanted the same SES squad for his chosen successor, Hillary Clinton. The deplorable Democrat lost, so POTUS 44 deployed the DOJ, FBI and intelligence agencies against candidate and President Trump. As the people should know, the SES also operates in the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the Secret Service. Not much efficiency was in view on July 13 in Pennsylvania.
As Milton Friedman observed, government agencies are easy to start but practically impossible to eliminate. Elon and Vivek should start with the Department of Education a legacy of Jimmy Carter. Obama now challenges Jimmy as the worst ex-president, so go after the wasteful Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, created in 2011. For the record, we need something like Pompous Jive: How a Composite Character President Wrecked Our Country, Coddled Terrorists, and Gave Us the Party of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Don’t look for such a book from the “presidential historians” at PBS, which could also use an existential problem. Elon, Vivek, Donald, and all you people in Congress, time to get busy.
