New York City Mayor Adams announced on Thursday the city will end the voucher program for migrants in taxpayer-funded hotels to pay for food and baby supplies.
“As we move towards more competitive contracting for asylum seeker programs, we have chosen not to renew the emergency contract for this pilot program once the one-year term concludes,” Mayor Eric Adams’s Office said in a statement.
According to ABC 7 News, “since late March, the city has provided prepaid debit cards totaling $3.2 million to some 2,600 migrant families living in hotels so that they can buy food and baby supplies.”
Adams had a conversation with President-elect Trump on Wednesday about his election victory prior to the announcement.
Trump made border security and imposing tougher restrictions on illegal immigration as a focus of his 2024 campaign.
