Maria Cantwell has won Washington’s Senate race.
Democrat incumbent Cantwell faced off against Republican challenger Raul Garcia in Washington’s Senate race.
Cantwell has held the state’s Senate seat since 2001.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Cantwell became the first member of her family to graduate from college, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Ohio.
She served as a member of the Washington House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993, and the U.S. House from 1993 to 1995.
After losing her bid for re-election Cantwell moved on to work as the senior vice president of consumer products for RealNetworks before stepping back into the political sphere in 2001.
“During her time in the Senate, Maria pledged to honor the hard work, aspirations, and faith of the people of the State of Washington,” according to Cantwell’s campaign website.
Raul Garcia is originally from Cuba. Garcia and his mother escaped Castro’s communist regime when he was just 11, immigrating to Spain before obtaining political asylum in the United States.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology/Immunology from the University of Miami and graduated from medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“America has given me the opportunity to make the American Dream a reality. So, when I see the problems facing our state and our nation, I will step up and work to help resolve them,” Garcia wrote in Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection 2024 survey.
Garcia’s campaign centered around addressing the fentanyl crisis, inflation and the cost of living, women’s healthcare, abortion, rising crime, and more.
At the time of this reporting, Cantwell won with 60.4% of the vote compared to Garcia’s 39.6%
61% of the expected votes have been counted.
