Tim Kaine has won Virginia’s Senate race.
Incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine faced off against Republican challenger Hung Cao in the race for Virginia’s Senate seat.
Kaine has served in the Senate since 2013. Prior to being in the Senate, he was the Mayor of Richmond, the Governor of Virginia and he was The Chair of the Democratic National Committee.
In 2016, Kaine was picked by Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to be her vice-presidential running mate. However, the duo lost to 45th President Donald J. Trump.
According to his website, during his time in the Senate, Kaine addressed the opioid crisis, lowered the price of prescription drugs, funded local law enforcement and reduced military spouse unemployment.
“Tim was initially elected in 1994 and served as a member of the city council until becoming mayor of Richmond four years later. He worked with law enforcement and the community to identify solutions that reduced the rate of violent crime in Richmond, which had one of the highest homicide rates in America when he was first elected to the city council,” his website states.
“In 2002, he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, and in 2006, he was sworn in as the state’s 70th governor. Tim made improvements to the health care and education systems when he was governor, and by the end of his time, top newspapers named Virginia the finest state for business and the best state to raise children,” it continued.
The Democrat in the race, Cao, came to the United States as a refugee from Vietnam in 1975. He is an American military veteran who served with special operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia.
The Republican candidate is endorsed by the 45th president.
Hung’s non-combat responsibilities included coordinating with Homeland Security, the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, and the Pentagon to balance the Navy’s $140 billion budget. He obtained fellowships at Harvard and MIT in addition to his master’s degree in physics from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Regarding the GOP candidate, Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, said: “Hung Cao is one of the most impressive U.S. Senate candidates running for office today, and I am proud to give him my strongest endorsement. He’s dedicated to putting America first, to fighting for our liberties, to exposing tactics of tyranny that threaten our future. He is one of the rare few who will stand up to any foe. He won’t bend and he won’t break.”
Trump added, “A Combat Veteran and Highly Decorated Special Operations Officer, Hung Cao will be a tireless fighter to stop inflation, grow our Economy, secure our Border, strong support our incredible Military/Vets, and defend our always under siege Second Amendment,” former President Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Hung Cao has my Complete and Total Endorsement,” he continued.
The opponents battled it out during their only debate on October 2nd.
One moment from the debate that notably stood out was when the candidates argued over diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
“When you’re using a drag queen to recruit for the Navy, that’s not the people we want,” Cao said. “What we need is alpha males and alpha females who are going to rip out their own guts, eat them and ask for seconds. Those are the young men and women that are going to win wars.”
At the time of this reporting, Kaine won with 52.7% of the vote compared to Cao’s 47.3%
77% of the expected votes have been counted.
