Ted Cruz has won Texas’ Senate race.

Incumbent GOP Senator Cruz faced off against Democrat challenger Colin Allred in the race for Texas’ Senate seat.

Cruz has maintained the Lone Star State’s seat in the upper chamber since 2013. He previously served as the state’s Solicitor General from 2003 to 2008. 32-years-old at the time, Cruz was the youngest person in the nation to hold the position.

Cruz also threw his hat in the ring for the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 2016, but dropped out after losing to Trump in the Indiana primary.

He is a former law clerk to Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Notably, the Texas Republican was among the 20 people included on former President Trumps’ list of potential nominees to the Supreme Court, later picking Amy Coney Barrett.

According to his website, “Sen. Ted Cruz represents 30 million Texans in the U.S. Senate as a passionate fighter for limited government, national security, and economic growth.”

Allred is a member of the House and was elected to represent Texas’ 32nd Congressional District in 2019.

Before entering the political sphere, Allred played football for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. He went on to earn a law degree and worked for the Obama Administration in the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Immigration took the center stage of both candidates’ campaigns.

Allred’s website said “he knows our current immigration system is broken and supports comprehensive immigration reform that includes securing our borders, protecting Dreamers, and providing a pathway to earned citizenship for those who are working hard and obeying the law.”

Cruz co-sponsored the SAVE ACT, which would have required proof of citizenship before being able to vote in U.S. elections. He also co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act and recently introduced the Justice for Jocelyn Act, both honoring two young girls who were killed by illegal immigrants.

At the time of this reporting, Ted Cruz won with 53.7% of the vote compared to Colin Allred’s 44.3%

74% of the expected votes have been counted.
