In a shock result to Democrats, Republican Bernie Moreno has won Ohio’s Senate race.

Incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown faced off against Republican challenger Bernie Moreno in the race for Ohio’s Senate seat.

Brown has maintained his slot in the upper chamber since 2007. He also served as the Ohio Secretary of State from 1983 to 1991.

The Democrat has built a reputation for “fighting for blue-collar workers.”

Brown has also worked with Republicans to block China from purchasing farmland and restricting foreign steel.

“Sherrod believes that when you love your country, you fight for the people who make it work,” says Brown’s campaign website. “He’s never been afraid to stand up to corporations and special interests to level the playing field for Ohioans — from standing up to Wall Street to taking on Big Pharma.”

Moreno was born in Bogota, Columbia. He moved to the U.S. at the age of five and officially became an American citizen at 18.

“Solving our country’s problems requires common sense,” Moreno wrote on his website. “In Washington, Bernie will fight to shrink government, protect our freedoms, stop the Chinese communist party from taking our data and land, and always put America First.”

Two issues important to Ohio voters that the two candidates agreed on included opposing free trade agreements and putting tariffs on more imported goods, along with tougher border restrictions and security.

Moreno, who was endorsed by 45th President Trump and the National Border Patrol Council, supports the mass deportation of illegal immigrants, whereas Brown centers his support for stronger security around the hefty amount of fentanyl and other drugs flowing over the border.

At the time of this reporting, Moreno won with 50.4% of the vote compared to Brown’s 46.3%

90% of the excepted votes have been counted.
