Democrat incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand faced off and won against Republican Mike Sapraicone in the race for New York’s Senate seat.

Gillibrand was first appointed to her seat in 2009. Prior to getting into politics, she was a New York City Police detective who went on to create a security services company.

Her website reads: “After being first elected to the House of Representatives, Kirsten became the first member of Congress ever to post a daily report listing her official meetings, earmark requests, and personal financial disclosures online for public consumption. Additionally, she authored the STOCK Act to ban members of Congress and their families from insider trading and has led reform efforts to ban members of Congress from owning and trading stocks at all.”

Gillibrand chairs the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, and she is a senior member of the Armed Services Committee. Gillibrand has also been a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, where she has advocated for increased nutrition aid for veterans, seniors, and children as well as reform of dairy prices on behalf of New York farmers. In addition, Senator Gillibrand is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which focuses on cybersecurity.

Gillibrand says that she is “committed to making sure families in our state get a fair shake and a fighting chance to succeed through access to good jobs, quality education, and affordable health care.”

Sapraicone is a retired New York Police Department detective, community volunteer, small business founder, and nationally-recognized security expert.

Mike started working as a police officer in 1980 and spent 20 years with the New York Police Department, first as a transit cop guarding millions of subway passengers. He worked to bring well-known offenders to justice after being promoted to first-grade investigator in recognition of his commitment to duty.

He ran his campaign on five key topics, public safety, border security, affordability, quality of life and integrity in government.

Mike is on the boards of Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, Catholic Youth Organization, and the Columbus Citizens Foundation.

The Republican candidate was endorsed by 45th President Donald J. Trump.

“Mike has my complete and total Endorsement! I look forward to working with him to take New York State away from the people who have destroyed it,” Trump stated.

At the time of this reporting, Gillibrand won with 67.1% of the vote compared to Sapraicone’s 32.4%

35% of the expected votes have been counted.
