Elizabeth Warren has won the Massachusetts Senate race.
Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), the Democrat incumbent, faced off against John Deaton (R-Mass.) in the race for the Massachusetts Senate seat.
Warren was first elected to the seat in 2012. The Democrat candidate, who is referred to as “Pocahontas” by 45th President Donald Trump, is the first female to ever hold the seat.
The comical nickname is in reference to Warren’s previous claim that she had Native American Cherokee ancestors, seemingly in an attempt to pander to Indigenous people and to come off as more relatable to minority demographics in general.
However, after presenting a DNA test, Warren’s assertion backfired heavily with the same group that she strived to represent.
“Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong,” Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin, Jr., said in a statement at the time. “It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage.”
In 2020, the Massachusetts Democrat also ran an unsuccessful bid for president against Joe Biden. Lately, she has been an outspoken supporter of Harris, calling her disciplined, intelligent, and “not afraid of a bully.”
According to her website, Warren ran her 2024 Senate campaign on promises of “making the rich pay their fair share,” “fighting climate change,” “building a green economy,” “raising wages,” and “ensuring racial and economic justice and opportunity for all.”
Deaton, who was not endorsed by Trump, ran as a socially liberal but fiscally conservative candidate.
Deaton labels himself as “a successful trial attorney, U.S Marine veteran, cancer survivor, father to three young daughters, and someone who overcame impossible odds to build a life for his family and become a champion for other underdogs,” according to his website.
For his past service, John received the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
Additionally, one of his claims to fame was that he personally funded the testing of Claire’s products globally, finding all to be contaminated with asbestos.
His campaign website states, “For too long, politicians in Washington have failed to act, and under Elizabeth Warren’s watch the problem has exploded. There are no winners under the immigration policies supported by Senator Warren – our people are less safe, our social service agencies and health care system are overwhelmed, and our poorest communities and citizens have less access to the amenities and services they rely on.”
He has served as a Marine, helped asbestos victims and cryptocurrency holders as an attorney, and he now hopes to serve the residents of Massachusetts.
Deaton also strives to ban the use of medical debt in credit scoring, enact a 3–5-year ban on lobbying for elected officials after they leave office, and provide complete transparency in campaign finance laws.
At the time of this reporting, Warren won with 81.6% of the vote compared to Deaton’s 18.3%
