Chris Murphy has won the Connecticut Senate race.
Murphy (D-Conn.), the incumbent, faced off against Matt Corey (R-Conn.) in the race for the Connecticut Senate seat.
Murphy was first elected to the seat in 2012.
He made headlines recently after expressing that he is worried Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be trying to influence the U.S. presidential election.
The Democrat is an avid supporter of much stricter gun laws and the Affordable Care Act.
“The Affordable Care Act contains comprehensive health insurance reforms and includes tax provisions that affect individuals, families, businesses, insurers, tax-exempt organizations and government entities. These tax provisions contain important changes, including how individuals and families file their taxes. The law also contains benefits and responsibilities for other organizations and employers,” according to the IRS.
Murphy emphasizes that one of his major focuses is creating stricter gun laws, and the Democrat candidate boasts that he has “championed a number of bipartisan bills aimed at expanding background checks and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.”
Murphy highlights that his main political interests revolve around women’s health, climate change and the environment, health care, election reform, roads and rails, jobs, LGBTQ equality, mental health and addiction, and immigration.
“The story of America’s greatness is rooted in our immigrant history – our commitment to opening our doors to people from every corner of the world and every walk of life… I am committed to upholding the legacy of this uniquely American story and fighting against those who seek to undermine the value and economic importance of immigrants,” Murphy states.
His GOP opponent, Matthew Corey, was not endorsed by 45th President Donald J. Trump. However, he was endorsed by the Connecticut Fraternal Order of Police.
According to his website, the Republican, Corey, enlisted in the Navy in 1982. Corey was deployed to Beirut in 1983 and served until 1987.
After his military service, Corey worked for the U.S. Postal Service and then later as a truck driver for the Teamsters.
Unlike his competitor, he is a major supporter of Israel.
Corey based his campaign on building a stronger economy, securing the border, and putting Connecticut residents first.
“Matt also owned and operated McKinnon’s Pub in Hartford beginning in 2002. He now owns and operates The One Wood Pub at East Hartford Golf Course,” his website continues.
As a resident and business owner, Matt maintains that he is aware of the ways that both action and inaction have affected Connecticut’s citizens and business owners, whether in day-to-day activities, career endeavors, or long-term objectives.
“Connecticut families are struggling, but Murphy’s multimillion-dollar ad campaign conveniently avoids mentioning inflation and skyrocketing energy costs,” Corey stated. “That’s no accident— Murphy supports policies that make life more expensive for the people he’s supposed to represent. While families suffer, he’s taken over $80,000 from Eversource, the very company driving up energy prices.”
At the time of this reporting, Murphy won with 69.6% of the vote compared to Corey’s 28.9%.
1% of the vote has been counted.
