X owner Elon Musk has launched an investigation into the alleged artificial manipulation of Kamala Harris‘s online presence by her campaign’s operatives.
The shock move, which could send shockwaves throughout the political landscape, follows revelations about coordinated efforts to boost Harris’ digital footprint.
It’s no surprise that the Harris campaign would do everything to make it look like she is more popular because, in reality, nobody really likes her.
The news comes after The Federalist published a series of details on how Democratic operatives conducted “astroturfing” campaigns across major social media platforms, a method used to create the illusion that Harris is popular.
Musk responded to the allegations on X, confirming, “We are investigating this.”
Musk also expressed electoral concerns regarding Harris during a Pennsylvania rally, The Federalist noted.
The Harris campaign has employed sophisticated astroturfing techniques to create a false impression of grassroots support, according to o an internet watchdog known as Reddit Lies.
The investigation revealed Harris’s campaign volunteers dominated the political conversation on Reditt.
“126 of the top 1,000 posts in the past month on r/Politics were posted by official Harris-Walz campaign volunteers,” the watchdog reported, highlighting the campaign’s significant influence on the platform.
“Owning one out of every eight of all top posts in r/Politics is not an easy feat, and it doesn’t just happen,” Reddit Lies wrote, warning of a deliberate strategy to bypass the platform’s safeguards against spam
The investigation also uncovered what appeared to be a manipulation of X’s Community Notes feature, the platform’s fact-checking tool.
Harris supporters systematically downvoted any community notes that were negative about her campaign.
The watchdog likened the strategy to fake product reviews on e-commerce platforms:
“It’s no different than a shady company paying a team to write a bunch of fake Amazon reviews about their product to make it appear to be a better and more popular product than it is,” it wrote.
“In a U.S. election, it could mean that the falsely advertised candidate receives more votes,” the Reddit Lies warned.
The investigation went on to detail how Democratic staffers allegedly coordinated such efforts via Discord channels, with a dedicated “twitter-community-notes” channel used to organize voting patterns on its fact-checking feature.
The report also claims that “virtually none of the false and misleading tweets from Kamala Harris’ campaign have Community Notes appended to them,” suggesting their strategy was successful.
But now they’ve been caught.
