We’re raising a bunch of fragile kiddos, aren’t we?
Thanks to their hyper-political teachers, students now feel nothing but stress when it comes to elections. For example, the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York sent an email to families saying students who are feeling stressed about the election can go ahead and skip school without any repercussions (except the loss of their education, of course).
“No matter the election outcome,” the school “will create space to provide students with the support they may need,” Principal Stacey Bobo reportedly said.
Unfortunately for the school’s reputation, two of its students have a rather famous parent.
Jerry Seinfeld was none too happy when he received the email letting him know his kids could skip school due to election stress:
“This is why the kids hated it,” Seinfeld was quoted as saying. “What kind of lives have these people led that makes them think that this is the right way to handle young people? To encourage them to buckle. This is the lesson they are providing, for ungodly sums of money.”
Schools in my area are completely closed for election day.
When I was a kid, schools used to celebrate elections by having the students make poster art for both sides and displaying them in the hallways.
Not to date myself, but my poster had a large green bush with a quail peeking out from behind it. The tagline read: “Behind every Bush, there’s a Quayle.” The teacher shot down my initial picture of Bill Clinton getting gored.
It really is a shame today’s teachers are teaching these kids to be such weenies, especially since there are so many punny posters a clever child could make with the candidates’ names: Trump driving vans or an heiress dancing the waltz.
And I guess, there also might be some sort of benefit in teaching children to be civically minded.
But mostly, school should be fun, and elections can be fun.
Bring back election fun in schools!
