Authorities have placed additional fencing around the White House and Naval Observatory on Monday, in preparation for a heated presidential election on Tuesday, which could come down to the wire.
The Secret Service installed similar barriers around the White House ahead of the 2020 election four years ago, which did not prompt protests on Election Day. The additional security also comes after former President Donald Trump survived two assassination attempts this year.
The Secret Service said the new fencing was being placed out of an abundance of caution, and not because of a specific threat, Politico reported. It did not indicate how long the fencing will be up.
“These enhancements are not in response to any specific issue but are part of wide-ranging public safety preparations for Tuesday’s election,” Alexi Worley, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, said in a statement.
New barriers are also being placed around Palm Beach County Convention Center in Florida, where Trump is expected to host his Election Night watch party.
Vice President Kamala Harris is having her watch party at Howard University, which is also getting new fencing, and local police said they will be closing several streets around the college beginning Monday evening.
