In the last days of the presidential campaign, Democrats have cranked the hysteria up to 12. Start with Tim Walz, who referred to Elon Musk as “that gay guy,” and then, with a malicious leer, said “Michigan knows that word.”
Walz’s aides now say he “misspoke,” and blamed it on a “stutter.” We have listened to Walz’s endless yammering for some years now, and we can assure you, he does not have a stutter. What is odd about the slur is that Walz is a great champion of the LGBTQWhatever world. That, plus the fact that Elon has 12 children. Or thereabouts.
On the campaign trail, Donald Trump vowed to protect all women from the ravages of illegal immigration, whether they like it or not. Kamala Harris seized on the last clause, and construed it as an attack on abortion:
“It’s just — it’s actually is, I think, very offensive to women in terms of not understanding their agency, their authority, their right and their ability to make decisions about their own lives, including their own bodies,” Harris told reporters in Wisconsin.
Harris quickly rephrased her statement, saying, “It is offensive to everybody.”
That was too much even for Jake Tapper, who pointed out that Harris was misrepresenting Trump’s statement.
Then we have Trump’s attack on Liz Cheney. Attacking Cheney as a warmonger, Trump said that she should be given a rifle and experience people firing at her. Again, the Democrats twisted Trump’s words. This was the headline in the Telegraph: “Trump has threatened me with death, says Liz Cheney.” Other headlines referred to a “firing squad.”
In fact, of course, Trump was making the “chickenhawk” argument that Democrats used to make against Dick Cheney and others: you are in favor of war, but you don’t put on a uniform and get shot at yourself. It was a dumb argument when the Democrats made it, and it is a dumb argument now. But more fundamentally, why on God’s green Earth was Trump talking about Liz Cheney? He should be laser-focused on the border and the cost of living, not petulantly pursuing his personal grudges. This kind of blunder threatens to undo much of the good will he gained with the masterful McDonalds and garbage truck episodes.
And so the campaign stumbles to a finish. It has always been Trump’s to lose, but, as Harris seems to be picking up steam, it may be that Trump has found a way to lose it.
