New York City Mayor Eric Adams defended former President Donald Trump on Saturday, criticizing Democrats for labeling the Republican nominee a “fascist” and drawing comparisons to Adolf Hitler.
“I have had those comments hurled at me by some political leaders in the city; my answer is ‘No,’” Adams said on Friday after he was asked about those criticisms of Trump, the New York Post reported.
“I know what Hitler has done, and I know what a fascist regime looks like. I think, as I have called for over and over again, that the level of conversation, I think we can all dial down the temperature,” added Adams, a moderate Dem who is currently facing federal corruption charges.
Adams made these remarks during a news conference in Manhattan, where he outlined plans for a “large police presence” at Trump’s rally scheduled for Sunday at Madison Square Garden, The Post added.
Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and President Biden intensified their criticism of Trump this week following allegations that the former commander-in-chief had praised Hitler while in the Oval Office. The claim first appeared in The Atlantic and was subsequently confirmed by retired Marine Corps Gen. John Kelly, who served as Trump’s White House chief of staff.
Trump fired Kelly not long after moving him from head of the Department of Homeland Security to chief of staff. Kelly had not mentioned anything about “fascist tendencies” until The Atlantic’s hit piece.
Harris’ campaign issued over a dozen press releases this week, emphasizing the claims made by Kelly regarding his private conversations with Trump. One release highlighted an instance in which the former president allegedly stated that “Hitler did some good things” by having “rebuilt the [German] economy.”
Trump has repeatedly denied ever saying anything positive about Hitler and accused The Atlantic of being “a failing magazine.”
Harris’s surrogates are using Sunday’s MSG event to criticize Trump for allegedly trying to “re-enact” a Nazi rally held there 85 years ago.
“Trump [is] actually re-enacting the Madison Square Garden rally in 1939,” said twice-failed 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on CNN’s “The Source” Thursday night. Clinton got no pushback from host Kaitlin Collins over her false allegation.
Adams said he “strongly disagree[s]” with anyone saying the rally should be cancelled.
“This is America. This is New York, and I think it’s important that we allow individuals to exercise their right to get their message clear to New Yorkers,” Adams, a retired NYPD captain, said. “And our job as a city and as a Police Department is to make sure they can do that in a peaceful, in a peaceful way.”
“You will see a … heavy uniform presence around The Garden,” Chief of Patrol John Chell said.
“We’ll see heavy weapons teams, counter-terrorism, aviation, …, blocker vehicles. We are the best at what we do. We prepare for protests every day. We will have a very safe day tomorrow for all New Yorkers,” he added.
GOP leaders sent a letter to Harris last week asking her to dial down her rhetoric, calling it “dangerous” and suggesting it could inspire more assassination attempts against him. But she ignored the joint letter from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and instead has continued to use the language at her rallies.
She continued to hammer “the danger and the threat that Donald Trump poses to America and the fact that he is unfit to serve.”
“Well, listen, we all must speak out against any form of political violence, and I’m very clear about that. No one should be the subject of violence,” she said to reporters.
“But the American people deserve to be presented with facts and the truth. And the fact and the truth is that some of the people closest to Donald Trump when he was president, generals, including most recently, John Kelly, a four-star Marine General, have been very clear about the danger and the threat that Donald Trump poses to America and the fact that he is unfit to serve. And the American People deserve to hear that and know about that,” she said.
