Former president Donald Trump has suggested he will abolish the federal income tax for American families if he wins back the White House in November.

During a visit to a barbershop in the Bronx, Trump was asked if there was “a way to eliminate federal taxes.”

Citing the policies of the late 1800s, when income tax funds were replaced by new trade tariffs, the former president hinted the country could go back to a time “when we were a smart country” and “relatively the richest it ever was.”

“It had all tariffs — it didn’t have an income tax,” said Trump.

“Now we have income taxes, and we have people that are dying.”

“They’re paying tax, and they don’t have the money to pay the tax,” he added.

The Republican presidential candidate said America was becoming so rich during the 1890s that “we had to set up committees, blue ribbon committees (on) how to spend our wealth—we had no idea how to spend it; there was so much money.”

“Then we went to the income tax system and the rest is sort of history,” said Trump.

If Trump follows through on his promise, the IRS will effectively be abolished.

The barbershop customer who asked the question responded, telling Trump, “Everyone could attaint the American dream if it wasn’t for the burden of high taxes. And we tax it every step of the way, when we make it, and when we spend it!”

Trump interrupted, “And regulations!” adding, “So, I cut more regulations in four years than any other president!”

The former president vowed to impose import tariffs of 10 to 20 percent on foreign goods and a 60 percent levy on items shipped from China.

Trump threatened John Deere with a 200 percent tariff if the tractor manufacturer shipped jobs to Mexico.

Such a drastic change would have to overcome a huge deficit since payroll taxation currently accounts for around 94 percent of federal income.

The U.S. currently imports around $3 trillion worth of goods from overseas, compared to the $4.2 trillion generated in income and payroll taxes in the last fiscal year.
