You’d think the guys over at The Babylon Bee had lost their minds, but no, “The Carpenter” is a real movie coming out Nov. 1:

This movie is really about a “Viking” (which was a term and identity that didn’t exist in the first century AD) being an orphan MMA fighter who apprentices for Jesus Christ before Jesus began his earthly ministry.

I’d love to know who invested in this movie.

Who was like, “Yes, what the world needs now is an extra-biblical film about Jesus discipling a northern European MMA fighter in Roman-controlled Israel.”

(Answer: This film is premiering in Utah and the film distributor has published movies exploring the Mormon faith, so it was the Mormons. The Mormons thought this was a good idea.)

It’s important to drive this point home: This is supposed to be a serious film that seeks to connect the audience to the person of Christ – it’s NOT a comedy.

Trying to endear an audience to Christ with extra-biblical American fan fiction is already treading dangerous spiritual waters (make sure to use your gifts to “positively affect those around you,” fam!), but when you’ve got the audience laughing at a premise that is supposed to be emotionally deep, it adds insult to injury.
