Israel has arrested seven immigrants accused of spying for Iran. Israeli police and internal security service Shin Bet announced the arrests on Monday, Oct. 21.

The seven individuals have been accused of conducting extensive espionage on military bases and strategic sites across Israel. All suspects are Jewish immigrants from Azerbaijan who obtained Israeli citizenship and currently reside in Haifa and other parts of northern Israel.

They reportedly carried out around 600 missions for Iranian intelligence over two years. Among those arrested is a soldier who had deserted from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), raising concerns about insider threats to Israel’s national security.

The group is accused of collecting sensitive intelligence on several high-profile IDF military sites, including the Ramat David Airbase southeast of Haifa, the Nevatim Airbase in the Negev desert in southern Israel, the Glilot base – the headquarters of IDF military intelligence force Unit 8200 – just north of Tel Aviv and Camp Shraga, the base of the IDF’s Golani Brigade, which Hezbollah recently targeted.

Additionally, they allegedly gathered information on strategic sites, including IDF headquarters in HaKirya in Tel Aviv and several sites for Iron Dome missile defense platforms.

The military sites the spies targeted were of particular importance, with Ramat David and Nevatim airbases being hit in Iran’s ballistic missile attacks on Israel earlier in October.

Suspects linked to Iranian intelligence

According to Israeli prosecutors, the group was closely linked to Iranian intelligence, receiving detailed maps of strategic sites from their Iranian handlers. The espionage activities included photographing sensitive installations and documenting military assets, all of which were transferred to Iranian intelligence agents.

Reports indicate the suspects were paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency for their efforts. (Related: Boris Johnson claims a SPY DEVICE was found in his bathroom after Netanyahu’s 2017 visit.)

The arrests reveal the depth of Iran’s espionage operations within Israel. This latest case follows other recent incidents, including the September arrest of an Israeli businessman accused of spying for Iran and allegedly plotting to assassinate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar.

Investigators discovered that the group had been operating under the direction of two Iranian intelligence agents, “Alkhan” and “Orkhan.” The espionage operation was reportedly well-organized, with specific instructions given on which sites to target, how to photograph them, and how much payment would be received in return.

Police revealed that three of the suspects were apprehended while photographing sensitive locations in southern Israel, and investigators uncovered dozens of documents detailing their espionage activities. These documents reportedly contained precise instructions on what information to collect, the exact vantage points to use, and how to communicate the findings to Iranian intelligence via encrypted software.

The arrests underscore the growing reach of Iranian intelligence within Israel and highlight the seriousness of the threat posed by Iranian espionage networks. The suspects’ activities have been described as inflicting significant security damage on Israel, with officials warning that the intelligence they provided could have aided Iranian missile attacks. Israeli authorities emphasized that the severity and scope of this espionage operation make it one of the most serious cases of national security breaches in recent years.
