It feels like the United States is more divided than ever, but if asked how we got to this point, most people could suggest at least one or two events that they believe precipitated the anger.

Unless you’re asking former President Barack Obama, who claimed during a Wisconsin rally on Tuesday that he doesn’t “understand how we got so toxic and just so divided and so bitter.”

“I don’t understand how we got so toxic and just so divided and so bitter,” he said. “I get why sometimes people just don’t want to pay attention to it. And we all have friends like that; we have family members who are just like, ‘Ahh, y’know, it’s all a circus out there.’”
