Lucas Kunce is the Democrat running against Josh Hawley in Missouri. He did a photo op with his friend Adam Kinzinger, the former Congressman and former Republican, at an outdoor gun range. Kunce considered it a “great day at the range” even though he shot a reporter. Kunce’s statement that “shrapnel can always fly” is absurd. If shrapnel is flying at at range, you are doing something seriously wrong. It is fortunate that no one was killed.

This is Kunce’s spin:

Conservatives who know something about firearms quickly jumped in to enumerate the errors:

Why would you target shoot with a rifle at a distance of 20 feet? They could have thrown rocks and hit the targets at that range.

The press did what it could to help Kunce:

These guys, Kunce and Kinzinger, obviously don’t know a rifle from a broomstick. The interesting question is, why did they feel obliged to pretend? Why did they set up an obviously fake photo op to suggest they are somehow pro-gun?

I suppose the question answers itself. Kunce says he was “hang[ing] out with union workers while exercising our freedom.” But everyone knows that freedom won’t last long if Democrats ever have enough votes to bring about their long-cherished goal of gun confiscation. In the meantime, on this issue as on many others, unless they are running in a deep blue jurisdiction Democrats have to fake conservative leanings.

Maybe Tim Walz can take Lucas Kunce on his next pheasant hunt.

UPDATE: I should give the last word to Senator Hawley:
