Former President Donald Trump will headline an event in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Thursday that caters to Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voters, organizers of the event said on Wednesday.

Trump is scheduled to appear alongside former Republican presidential candidate and billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who announced on Tuesday night that she was officially joining the Republican Party.

The event is organized by the conservative, student-oriented political action committee (PAC) Turning Point USA, and aims to bring the AAPI community into the Republican movement, according to NBC News.

“These are voters whose values closely align with the conservative platform but have been given too little attention by our movement,” Turning Point founder and president Charlie Kirk said. “Just as we’re seeing huge shifts with Hispanics and the black community, this is a group that is poised to resonate powerfully with President Trump’s message of economic empowerment, law-and-order, safe streets, and a return to orderly, sane immigration policies.”

The majority of the AAPI community (58%) supported President Joe Biden in 2020, with 40% supporting Trump. It is the fastest growing demographic in Nevada, according to NBC.

Democratic AAPI leaders said they do not agree with Kirk’s characterization of the demographic, claiming that the voters they have spoken to are “tired” of Trump’s “rhetoric.”

“The folks we’ve talked to, including small-business owners and working families, are still feeling the impact of his administration’s actions — from tax cuts for the wealthy and the mishandling of the pandemic to the rise in anti-Asian hate,” One APIA Nevada executive director Eric Jeng said.
