Detroit postal worker Austin Matthews was caught stealing over $32,000 in IRS refund checks.

He stole the checks and deposited them into his own account, using his bank’s app, which allows a user to take a picture of the check and the endorsement on the back.

There was just one thing that Matthews didn’t consider, which featured heavily in the court evidence against him:

His shorts!

Clearly the shorts of a U.S. Postal worker.

No one else would ever wear a pair of shorts like that!

Using the mobile app, Matthews deposited checks by photographing them. Investigators traced the deposits to him through images showing his postal uniform, which was visible in the background of the photographs, the affidavit reads.

If only he had thought through the background he was using to take those photos.

Well, that and how to avoid all the reports of missing checks and fraudulent deposits that were made into his account, which would have probably been enough even if it weren’t for those shorts.

It makes you wonder…

What exactly did this guy think was gonna happen?
