Tyrus’ telling anecdote left him apologizing to the former president as he wondered why more stories about the man, instead of the GOP leader, weren’t shared.

“I never understood why you fight.”

In September, while on his way to a rally at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, former President Donald Trump had stopped by Fox News to tape a record-breaking appearance on “Gutfeld!” After meeting that day, the president sat down with George “Tyrus” Murdoch for his own interview where the National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion recalled the off-camera moment with his daughter that showed Trump “the family man.”

“I actually owe you an apology before we start. I’ve been very critical about you, how you fight,” began the host on his Outkick podcast “Maintaining with Tyrus.”

“All through the campaigns — I voted for you because I like policy. I didn’t know you as a man. And I think when you don’t understand what a man fights for, you can get lost — especially with all the noise we’re seeing from fake news, etc., that created these pictures of you,” he continued.

“So, ‘Gutfeld!‘ show is over. Cameras are off. We go backstage, and I expected you to be like every politician or any celebrity I’ve body-guarded for,” continued Tyrus as he revealed Trump was nothing like a typical VIP. “And you met my family. And you talked to my daughter. My daughter is 10-years-old. Her name is Georgia. You guys talked for 20 minutes.”

“If nobody knew, you could have been her grandfather. You were talking about her horses and her dreams. And I was sitting there and I was like, ‘I have been so wrong about this man,’ because I never understood why you fight the way you fight. You’re a family man,” he expressed.

Appearing humbled by the account of his behavior as Trump the person and not Trump the businessman or former president, he replied simply, “I am.”

“You’re a father,” continued Tyrus as his guest turned the conversation around to complementing the former wrestler. “And your daughter is gorgeous — and your wife, the whole thing, you have got some set-up, I’ll tell you.”

“But your family’s great and you’re great, and you’ve really done something. And you’ve captured a certain spirit. You know, a friend of mine who’s very smart — he’s also a very big guy — he said because I’m big and strong, people think I’m not the smartest guy,” added Trump as Tyrus replied, “Oh, I know.”

“You are a really smart guy. And I see it and I’ve watched it and I like the show, and we have the privilege of having the highest rating in the history of the show when I did it a couple of weeks ago, that was-”

“Of all time,” interjected the host. “We beat network television.”

“You beat everybody,” said Trump as Tyrus added, “And they were up 35 million homes. It was a landslide.”

While the public had witnessed the president dote on three sons, two daughters, their significant others and his grandchildren, included a number of candid moments at the Republican National Convention only days after an attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania, stories of his generosity often went overlooked by corporate media hellbent on painting him as some kind of a monster.

To that end, Tyrus tried multiple times to get his guest to talk about how Trump had made his plane available for Nelson Mandela to travel to the United States in 1990.

“I just have great relationships with a lot of people,” said the former president when he first attempted to move past the topic. When it was brought up again, Trump replied broadly of things he has done in the past, “It’s something that I’ve never — I love doing it. I don’t need praise for it…I just like helping people. I help a lot of people, and I enjoy doing it and I never talk about it. It’s nice that you bring it up. I also think it’s not a narrative that the press likes talking about for me.”

Tyrus went on to add, “I’m voting for you now because of the man you are, not because of the policies, because not every American will get the opportunity that I had to [see] who you were backstage. I get it. You’re humble because you’re a father first.”

Still, reactions online suggested others were well aware of the man that the host had had a glimpse of backstage.
