A Republican election judge happened by this scene outside the City Hall in Edina, Minnesota, a Democratic stronghold. A vehicle parked with its tailgate open, and its trunk full of boxes of ballots:

A friend writes:

Totally unattended while the courier went in to get more ballots. Interestingly, the boxes are zipped tied, some with blue ties and some with red ties. You cannot make this up.

Presumably they were completed ballots in boxes that were to be transported to wherever Hennepin County keeps them until they are counted.

I have worked as an election judge several times and at the end of the day, the ballots are placed in boxes and zip tied for transport with the two lead judges, one Democrat and one Republican.

So many issues!

1. Why are they ever unattended?

2. Why would they require one Democrat and one Republican to transport ballots on election night but let one courier do it alone during the day?

3. The red/blue zip ties seems like such a dumb choice that would invite controversy. Do they think we are that stupid? Pick any other colors! Probably best to just pick one color?

If those are filled-out ballots, anyone could steal a box or two from the vehicle and trash them. Those votes then would not count. There is no reason to think that happened here, but the complete absence of ballot security is troubling, to say the least. Minnesota is a state where ballots have been found in the trunk of a car after the election. Oops! Forget to count them, let’s count them now!

Such incidents do not engender confidence in our elections, which is a problem. Unfortunately, we have one major political party that is determined to undermine confidence in our elections, along with confidence in other constitutional institutions, like the Supreme Court and the Senate.
