A member of the conservative Republican House Freedom Caucus whose Florida district was hit hard by Hurricane Milton was pleasantly surprised by President Joe Biden’s response to the natural disaster.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) who represents areas of Pinellas County that suffered much damage from high winds and flooding, said that she wasn’t expecting a call after the hurricane struck when she saw an unknown Washington, D.C.-based government phone number flash across her phone screen. When she answered, Biden was on the line.

“Well, I did not expect that. So I talked to him on the phone for about 10 minutes. First thing that he asked me was, what did I need for my constituents, and how did I fare with the storm. And then [we] moved forward into talking about the issues that we’re having with FEMA,” the first-term lawmaker told Fox News Digital.

Luna also said that she personally met with Biden when he toured areas damaged by the storm on Sunday and that they had an “extensive” talk about reforms for disaster aid.

It was an example of how Americans used to come together for a greater cause despite their political differences, something that was common before Democrats and their media flunkies poisoned the political discourse and pitted Americans against each other for the sake of accruing power for the party.

The congresswoman has been a ferocious critic of Biden and other Democrats since she was elected to Congress.

“I have obviously been very critical of President Biden in the past, but I will say that him stepping in and taking control of the situation to assist for the right reasons was very honestly kind of shocking for me,” she told Fox News Digital.

“Obviously, you know, we’re still going to be holding FEMA accountable… But as far as I am seeing, FEMA has been very helpful, and I’ve been in direct communication with them. And they’re absolutely going to assist because President Biden has told them to do so,” Luna added.

Luna told the outlet that she and the president discussed the situation in southeast states that were devastated by Hurricane Helene, along with the recovery efforts in Florida from the two storms.

“The one thing that I really wanted to hammer home was obviously, you know, FEMA getting debris cleared and really not holding the cities accountable for not being able to move debris in time,” she said. “So we sorted that out.”

The congresswoman is also calling for reforming the National Flood Insurance Program, saying it has been “largely unchanged since its inception in the 1960s,” according to Fox News Digital.

Rep. Luna said that she and the president agreed that the paltry $750 FEMA payment to disaster victims wasn’t enough.

“He said it was a ‘bunch of malarkey,’ which is 100% true, and that $750 was not enough,” she said.

Despite his faults – and there are many – Biden deserves credit for putting politics aside and doing his job to help Florida and those who had their lives upended by the Category Three storm that slammed into the Gulf Coast last week.

The Democrat leader worked with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to quickly get help to those affected and to restore essential services, unlike his veep Kamala Harris who tried to insert herself into the situation for purely political reasons less than a month before the election.
