The vice president’s physician said Harris maintains ‘a healthy, active lifestyle’ despite a busy schedule.

Vice President Kamala Harris is in “excellent health,” her physician said in a letter summarizing her medical history publicized by the White House.

Dr. Joshua Simmons, who has been seeing Harris for the past three-and-a-half years, concluded in the letter released Saturday that 59-year-old Democrat “possesses the physical and mental resiliency required to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.”

Harris has seasonal allergies and urticaria, a skin condition commonly known as hives which shows up as raised, itchy red bumps on the skin. She has been managing her allergies with over-the-counter allergy medication and for the past three years has been on allergy immune therapy, which Simmons said has reduced the symptoms “dramatically” to the point that she no longer needs regular medication.

Harris is also mildly nearsighted and wears correction contacts, but can “read comfortably” without them, the doctor said.

The vice president has a family history of colon cancer on her mother’s side, according to the letter. She has had no serious illnesses or surgeries as an adult.

Simmons wrote that she maintains “a healthy, active lifestyle despite her busy schedule,” including daily aerobic exercise and strength training. She does not use tobacco and drinks alcohol “only occasionally and in moderation.”

The Harris campaign released the letter, which reflects a physical examination taken this April, along with a call to Harris’s Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump.

Harris’s spokesperson Ian Sams posted the letter on X and wrote: “Your turn, [Donald Trump].”

Trump has shared few details about his own health, including after his ear was grazed by a bullet during an assassination attempt in July.

In November 2023, the Trump campaign released a letter from Dr. Bruce Aronwald, the former president’s personal physician since 2021, who attested to “exceptional” and “excellent” physical and cognitive condition based on the results of “several comprehensive examinations.”

“I am pleased to report that President Trump’s overall health is excellent. His physical exams were well within the normal range and his cognitive exams were exceptional,” said Aronwald.

The doctor reported that Trump’s cardiovascular tests were all normal, and cancer screening tests returned all negative. and that he has reduced his weight through “improved diet” and daily physical activity even as he campaigns.

“It is my opinion that President Trump is currently in excellent health, and with his continued interest in preventative health monitoring and maintenance, he will continue to enjoy a healthy active lifestyle for years to come,” Aronwald said.

Age emerged as a major issue in the campaign when President Joe Biden was still the Democratic nominee. Polls at that time showed that more than 70 percent of voters had concerns about the age of the leading candidates.

With 81-year-old Biden dropping out of the race, 78-year-old Trump became the oldest presidential nominee in U.S. history, and he would be the oldest president inaugurated if he wins a second term. He would be 82 when he leaves office.

Twelve U.S. presidents were 60 years or older at the time of their inauguration, and Biden and Trump are the only presidents older than 70 at the start of their terms.
