One person was killed and at least nine were wounded in a shooting Saturday evening near  Tennessee State University in Nashville as students celebrated homecoming, police said.

Students on campus were alerted to an active-shooter incident around 5:30 p.m., and police found 10 victims when officers arrived.

Nashville Police spokesperson Brooke Reese said five victims were sent to hospitals by ambulance, and five others were dropped off in private vehicles. One of the victims died.

Some of the victims treated at area hospitals “are also suspected to have been involved in the gunfire,” Reese said.

The university was celebrating homecoming, and the shooting occurred in an area or some of the festivities were ongoing.

Nashville Fire Department spokesperson Kendra Loney told The Tennessean that firefighters were participating in the community event when the gunfire started and sprang into action.
