Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) vowed to engage in an “out and out brawl” if “billionaire” Democratic Party backers attempt to replace Vice President Kamala Harris with Lina Khan as chair of the Federal Trade Commission.

Ocasio-Cortez’s response followed comments from Mark Cuban, a surrogate for the Harris-Walz campaign, who told Semafor that he would not retain Khan if he were in Harris’s position. The Shark Tank investor clarified that he has not communicated with Harris or her advisors regarding Khan. Cuban criticized Khan’s approach to regulating tech companies, particularly her stance on artificial intelligence, the New York Post and other outlets reported on Thursday.

“The bigger picture is, she’s hurting more than she’s helping,” Cuban said.

Other Harris supporters like LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Expedia Group chair Barry Diller also have been highly critical of Khan.

Cuban also expounded upon his frustrations with Khan in posts to X, calling artificial intelligence a “zero sum race for global dominance.”

“This is about AI. It’s a zero sum race for global dominance,” he wrote. “If we lose, the consequences are far more than economic. We have multiple companies fighting to win this race. And that competition is moving everyone forward. Even with the insane amount of capital required.”

The self-professed democratic socialist from New York took to the X platform to blast those billionaires playing “footsie” with the Democratic Party’s ticket.

“Let me make this clear, since billionaires have been trying to play footsie with the ticket: Anyone goes near Lina Khan and there will be an out and out brawl. And that is a promise,” she wrote. “She proves this admin fights for working people. It would be terrible leadership to remove her.”

FTC spokesperson Doug Farrar resalso ponded to Cuban’s criticism: “Chair Khan believes that choosing competition over centralized corporate control of markets is the path to letting the best ideas win.”

Socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). also ripped Cuban while praising Khan for “taking on corporate greed & illegal monopolies.” He called her the “best” FTC chair in “modern history.”

“[Mark Cuban] is wrong. Lina Khan is the best FTC Chair in modern history,” the senator wrote. “By taking on corporate greed & illegal monopolies, Lina is doing an exceptional job preventing large corporations from ripping-off consumers & exploiting workers.”

Bloomberg Brief also discussed AOC’s threat to fight to keep Khan in place during a segment on Thursday:

The Post added;

Throughout Khan’s tenure, she has gained a reputation for being tough on antitrust issues, causing complaints that she has hamstrung business deals.

In recent days, Khan has appeared at or been scheduled to appear at events with a handful of Democratic lawmakers — including Sanders and progressive Reps. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Greg Casar (D-Texas), and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) — as the 2024 campaign nears its end.

Ironically, Khan’s endeavors against Big Tech and conglomerates in other sectors have earned her occasional praise from populist Republicans such as Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Republican vice presidential hopeful Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio).

“I guess I look at Lina Khan as one of the few people in the Biden administration that I think is doing a pretty good job,” Vance noted earlier this year.
