The point of the First Amendment is to limit the government, not the people. Americans have the right to peacefully assemble and criticize elected officials, especially when they act like power-hungry tyrants.

Surprise Mayor Skip Hall did not seem to get that memo, as he vowed to criminalize speech that criticized the government. However, you can’t do that in America, and the City of Surprise, Arizona was forced to backtrack on its tyrannical rule prohibiting public complaints about city officials. The reason for this was that they arrested a mom after she dared to exercise her God-given rights. But the worst part about that is that the city is refusing to drop the criminal charges in their blatant disregard for the Constitution.

According to You Are The Power:

Rebekah Massie, a You Are The Power member, [was] unjustly arrested for simply exercising her right to free speech during her city council’s meeting in Surprise, Arizona, on August 20, 2024.

Rebekah, a dedicated wife and mother, was forcibly removed from the meeting in handcuffs while speaking during a public comment section about her concerns over the city attorney possibly receiving a pay raise. Her ten-year-old daughter was present, witnessing this traumatic event.

Mayor Skip Hall ordered an officer with the Surprise Police Department to silence and expel Rebekah. She was formally charged over the incident.

The bodycam footage has since been released yet the city does not care that their indifference to civil liberties is on public display.

Since then, the City of Surprise’s rule prohibiting complaints about city officials, the catalyst for Rebekah’s arrest, has been rescinded, yet Rebekah still faces criminal charges.

Both the city and police department should face charges, as this is a very serious and blatant attack on Freedom. These tyrants had no shame in their unconditional game and that is what’s especially concerning. If Americans don’t have the freedom to criticize elected officials then what freedom do we have? The worst part about this is how painfully obvious it is that she had every right to say and do what she did.

She has a right to peacefully air her grievances and it was the city that broke that peace, not here. If we lived in a serious country the Mayor would have been forced to resign by now but this seems to hardly be a story, which is a problem in itself.

Not only was her arrest unjust but the people responsible for it continued to show a lack of remorse towards their actions. They never have the right to what they did and all charges should be dropped immediately.
