On Monday, American Water revealed that it had been affected by “unauthorized activity” in its online network.

The utility company operates out of Camden, New Jersey and services 14 states including 18 U.S. military bases. It is considered the largest water utility company in the country. If you are in one of the nearly 1,700 communities it services, you may have noticed some difficulty recently when trying to access the company’s payment and billing platform.

On October 3, American Water claims it experienced a “cybersecurity incident” that resulted in the company moving the payment portal portion of its site, MyWater, offline until service can be resumed safely.

“American Water recently learned of unauthorized activity in our computer networks and systems which we determined to be the result of a cybersecurity incident. As part of our response, we proactively took our customer portal service, MyWater, offline, which means we are pausing billing until further notice. We are working diligently to bring our systems back online safely and securely,” they said in a statement.

“Our dedicated team of professionals are working around the clock to investigate the nature and scope of the incident. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this incident may cause and we are working diligently to remediate and to bring these systems back online in a safe and secure manner.”

They are bringing in outside resources to “assist with containment, mitigation, and an investigation into the scope and nature of the incident” and will be cooperating fully with law enforcement investigations.

While the billing portal is offline, customers will not face late fees or have their water shut off for non-payment.

American Water services the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, California, and Hawaii.
