Migrant workers in one state have found themselves faced with conflicting information after receiving mailers that are encouraging them to vote.

FOX2 reported that a St. Louis-area landscaping company revealed their non-U.S. citizen workers have been sent union mailers urging recipients to vote against former President Donald Trump and instead vote for Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz.

Watch:

The workers, all of whom have up-to-date H2B visas and are legally allowed to reside in the United States temporarily, are represented by the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA). FOX2 reports that they have repeatedly attempted to reach out to the Washington D.C.-based union for answers. While they did not receive a direct response, LiUNA released a social media statement calling accusations against them “absurd.”

LiUNA is proud to represent over 500,000 workers across North America, providing vital information on a range of issues, including politics, to keep our members informed about what’s happening within or concerning their union. This includes providing information to them about policies and policymakers who can impact their economic situation. LiUNA sends out information using its database, which does not indicate whether a worker is a U.S. citizen or legally working here through programs like guest worker visas. Laborers Local 110 did not send out this information.

“Neither Laborers Local 110 nor LiUNA encourages individuals to commit voting crimes. It is absurd to suggest that we advocate for non-citizens to vote. Such claims are insulting, as it is illegal for non-citizens to vote, and Missouri requires proof of identity before anyone can receive a ballot. Our priority continues to be supporting our members and their rights, their families, and their benefits.

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft is in charge of the state’s elections, and he says this situation proves that Missouri needs to do more to protect its election integrity.

“I think it shows why we need a law in Missouri that requires voters to show proof of citizenship before they register and before they vote,” he said in a statement to the local news organization. “You can register online without any proof of citizenship. You can register without even an ID. Now, we have implemented in Missouri a requirement that no one is allowed to get a ballot, even if they’re registered unless they have proven their identity at least once; so that is an extra check we have.”

He also warned that illegally voting in an American election as a non-citizen would ruin any chance for a migrant to become a citizen in the future.

“For somebody who did it accidentally who was trying to become a citizen, it would preclude them from becoming a U.S. citizen.”

He also revealed that migrants have come forward to reveal they were automatically registered to vote.

“They’ve been automatically registered even when they didn’t want to be and I applaud those individuals for coming forward and saying, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa; I love America, but I want to follow the law.”
