Alejandro Arcos, mayor of the Mexican city Chilpancingo, was murdered on Sunday after just 6 days in office, the state’s governor confirmed on Monday.

The murder comes three days after the city secretary, Francisco Tapia, was shot and killed.

Chilpancingo has a population of about 280,000 people in southwestern Mexico in the state of Guerrero, which has a high rate of violence.

“His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation,” Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado said in a statement.

Guerrero’s state attorney general’s office said it is currently investigating the murder, according to Reuters.

The outlet also reported that at least six candidates for elected office were killed prior to Mexico’s June 2 elections.
