The stories coming out of North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene are so heartbreaking that one Fox News anchor broke into tears while interviewing a grief-stricken mother who had just lived through devastating tragedy.

“One family is dealing with unimaginable grief, losing three loved ones in Asheville, North Carolina when they were swept away in flood waters. Two members of this family… one of which is a survivor of this devastating event, they’re coming out to share their story,” Fox Weather anchor Stephen Morgan starts in the interview.

The anchor then introduced the sisters who wept throughout the interview over their heart-wrenching loss.

“Megan Drye and her sister Heather Kephart lost their parents and Megan lost her 7-year-old son Micah,” anchor Marrisa Torres added. “Megan agreed to do the interview with us this morning in Micah’s honor.”

“Let us start by saying we are so, so sorry for your loss. Megan, you witnessed this happen and, and when we experience grief, so often we are asked, ‘How are you holding up?’ But I feel like I know the answer to that already, so let me ask you this then. How is your grief today?” Torres asked.

“My grief today is unfathomable. I’m sorrowful… you know I feel broken. Um, but what is the main thing I take away from grief is the uplifting of all the prayers I have received and I think all the chain of prayers that I have felt are the things that held me up… the things that are holding me together right now because if it was up to my humanly flesh I wouldn’t be able to do it,” Drye responded trying to hold her grief in check.

The distraught mother referenced family and friends who were helping her get through this horrific event.

Another sister, Jessica Turner, posted updates on Facebook as the deadly events of that day played out, sharing a now-viral photo of the flooding. Morgan asked Megan if she felt like sharing her thoughts about the picture that was taken while she, her son, and her parents took temporary refuge on the home’s roof.

“Yes, we did… it was our only hope at that point. Everything else was covered in water. We were on the roof and um, I considered at that moment that we were at our safe point. Um, so I took a picture because at that point I still had service and I wanted to keep them in the loop. Um, I thought we were okay still, um, until the house broke apart and until everything started to collapse. Um, devastation… I was terrified but in that moment, all I thought about was being a mom and keeping my son safe and reassuring him that this is how superheroes are made… we survive and we keep going and, um, I wanted to keep that alive in that moment so I never let the faith falter,” she commented.

Drye’s historic family home in Asheville, where her 73-year-old father Michael Drye practiced family law, “collapsed” into the rushing floodwater from Helene. Her parents and 7-year-old son were swept away, but she managed to survive despite being held down in the water by roots and trees. Megan eventually came loose and was carried by the current until she was miraculously rescued.

Heather Kephart explained through tears how everyone came together to pray for them and what it meant to the family.

Megan went on to speak about her son, “You know I’m so proud of my son because in his last moments, he wasn’t screaming for me. He was screaming ‘Jesus. Jesus, save me. Jesus, I hear you. Jesus, I’m calling upon you.’ And his wildest dreams and everything he wanted to be was a superhero and that was his goal in life and instead, he’s my hero because he reached for something past flesh, past human, past anything even grown adults I think would reach for.”

“My son called out to the one God almighty and I think at that moment, he was rescued and he became my hero and I think all of them carried me through that moment. I think that his biggest dreams… he was the smartest, smartest, greatest, hopeful, brave friend. Um, great son. I couldn’t have asked for a greater son and he was so happy up until the very end when he was screaming for Jesus. And in that moment, I think he found joy,” she recounted.

That was when Torres, who had been visibly moved throughout the interview couldn’t contain her emotions any longer. “You know, the innocence of children is actually quite spectacular. Oh, my gosh! I’m so sorry, ” she gasped as her co-anchor took over and even he choked up.

Drye somehow managed to continue to pay loving tribute to her parents.

The whole video is worth watching despite the pain and grief. It is a wonderful testament to those lost and to faith in God.

There was a lot of emotional reaction on X:
