Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick wants to teach children about their “rights.”

The controversial former San Francisco 49ers player touted his new children’s book in an interview on “CBS This Morning” Wednesday, appearing with wife Nessa Diab to promote, “We Are Free, You and Me.”

The couple co-founded the “Know Your Rights Camp” in 2015 and the book is based on the 10 principles of the camp whose mission is “to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders.”

“I had one of the youth at our Know Your Rights Camp ask me, ‘I love playing football, but I also really care about my community, and I saw what happened. How do I do both?’ And for me, I’ve had so many conversations like that, and my response is always, you don’t have to choose one or the other. You can do both,” Kaepernick said.

“We’re like, how do we bring this message to a younger audience, that they can feel, that they have agency, that they can be courageous, like they really get to take control of what their future destiny looks like,” he added.

“I just feel like it’s so the message is so easy to understand, and it’s just a reminder that, wow, I do have the right to it, be happy, to be healthy, to do what I want to do, and just to have that confidence,” Diab,  a radio show host and TV personality, agreed.

Kaepernick, who hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2017 when he infamously protested during the national anthem, said he still wants to play football.

“When I look at my career, it was 15 years of work and dedication before I ever stepped foot on an NFL field. And to have that passion, and chase it for that long, you don’t just give that up. You don’t just walk away. You chase that and you pursue it,” he said.

While Kaepernick will no doubt find many with his ideals ready to purchase his children’s book, there were plenty of social media users on X who wanted nothing to do with the former quarterback.
