The Mets and Braves played a doubleheader on Monday which looked like a play-in series for the playoffs, but was actually two makeup games from last week when Hurricane Helene rained them out in Atlanta.

The reason they played the doubleheader was due to a three-way tie between Atlanta, New York, and Arizona for the last two spots in the playoffs. Both Atlanta and New York needed one win apiece to get in, Arizona needed one of the two teams to sweep in order to get in, and the rest of us were just excited to watch more baseball.

Here’s my favorite breakdown of the scenario:

Turns out, the Braves and the Mets split the series and Arizona was eliminated from the playoff picture.

Here was the main highlight from game one as the Mets took the lead (and would keep it) in the top of the ninth inning.

That sealed the playoff spot for New York, so, being that they’d play in Milwaukee the next day, they were pretty stingy about who they let play in game two, which they lost 3-0.

The Mets didn’t have time to celebrate their playoff berth since the second game immediately followed the first, so they waited until the conclusion of game two, which coincidentally saw the Braves clinch a playoff spot as well. So the division rivals celebrated together at Truist Park in Atlanta, which is something I’ve just never seen before. In a normal situation, one team gets to celebrate making the playoffs and the other team just goes to the locker room. This was different.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is the beauty of baseball!

The Mets will now play a three-game wildcard series in Milwaukee, while the Braves travel out to San Diego for their three-game series.

And for the next month you might not hear much from me, as I’ll be glued to the couch watching October baseball in peace.
