LGBT activists are claiming space in the “gayborhood” and are protesting the new 76ers stadium.
According to ABC 6:
The project has always gotten pushback from Chinatown residents worried about businesses being negatively impacted and housing prices becoming unaffordable.
Not everyone wants a huge stadium in their “gayborhood” but they don’t get to claim something as a “queer safe space,” when these people also demand the masses “affirm” their deranged delusion.
Residents, businesses, drag performers and allies of the Gayborhood share those concerns, along with other worries about the proposed arena taking away safe queer spaces.
But what makes it a “Gayborhood” and are straight people allowed there?
“We are claiming space in the Gayborhood. We do not want to be pushed out again,” said Lasha Cristál, a local drag queen who often performs at clubs in the Gayborhood.
He can claim anything he wants but no one will take him seriously while looking like that. Additionally, I hardly doubt stadium owners care whether or not drag queens attend events.
Opponents are worried that the project’s proximity to the Gayborhood will create gentrification, make the area unaffordable, and take away queer and safe spaces.
No one wants to be pushed out by a lack of affordability but are city officials no longer allowed to make communities better? Would they prefer graffiti stay up and trash stay littered on the street?
“An arena by and for billionaires won’t be an economic catalyst for people who live here, but just serves to further enrich them in an attempt to further divide us,” said Shometha Monét, who is also a drag performer.
It’s not like the “billionaires” will live there. No one will be living there. Additionally, business owners should be happy with the potential for increased business.
I might be more understanding of their fake cause if they didn’t try and be as exclusive as possible while pretending they are the inclusive ones. And if they want people to be on their side the least they can do is not exclude the majority of the population.
That being said, the group would probably benefit from not having a spokesperson who parades around in a Disney princess dress but I digress.
