The government is famous for taking a while to get to things, but according to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., their latest mission is nothing more than a “weaponization” of authority.

The 30-year-old story, recounted in 2012 by RFK Jr.’s daughter Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy during an interview, is coming under renewed scrutiny despite never having been pursued in the past. RFK Jr. reportedly used a chainsaw to decapitate a whale carcass near Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. It is also claimed that he then mounted the head on the top of the family minivan and carted it home to New York, about five hours away.

It wasn’t until Kennedy launched his Independent presidential campaign that the story resurfaced and garnered the interest of federal investigators at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

During a campaign event for former President Donald Trump in Arizona, Kennedy revealed that he received a letter from the NOAA alerting him that they would be opening an investigation into the incident, which was confirmed to CNN by a spokesperson at the agency.

“It is long-standing NOAA practice not to comment on open investigations,” they said.
