Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis said Sunday evening the state will independently investigate the apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

“The people deserve the truth about the would be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee,” he posted on X.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the attempt Sunday afternoon by alleged gunman Ryan Wesley Routh to shoot Trump, now the GOP presidential nominee, from a fence along the Trump International Golf Club, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also helping investigate, according to the Associated Press

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson was at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home Sunday, the wire service also reports.

Johnson, of Louisiana, said Sunday evening he had just spent the past few hours with Trump and the former president is “unstoppable.”

He was not on the golf course during the incident.

They had a previously scheduled meeting, and Johnson posted a thumbs-up photo with Trump at Mar-a-Lago afterward, also according to the wire service.

Johnson said he and wife Kelly are thanking God for protecting Trump “once again,” referring to the assassination attempt on Trump on July 13 at at campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
