The New York Times admitted in a story that it was “basically true” that Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris supported the funding of transgender surgeries for migrants in U.S. custody.

During the ABC presidential debate on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump said that Harris supported funding for transgender surgeries for migrants.

Times reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg said that the remark needed context.

“Trump is referring to Harris’s response to a 2019 American Civil Liberties Union questionnaire, in which she said she supported using taxpayer funds to give access to gender-affirming care to transgender and nonbinary people, including those in immigration detention and prison,” The New York Times story said

Time magazine had to issue a correction after stating Trump’s claim as “false.”

The Atlantic also originally mocked Trump’s words, saying it was like “a phrase ChatGPT would spit out if you fed it right-wing posts and asked it to parody them,” according to Fox News, before updating the article to acknowledge Harris’s actual response to the ACLU questionnaire.
