According to a PBS News/NPR/Marist poll released Tuesday morning, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are in a dead heat in the race for the White House — but the poll also has significant warning signs for Harris.

She’s losing support among independent voters and Latino voters.

Republican pollster Whit Ayers called Harris’ dipping support with independents a “warning sign” for the vice president’s campaign; “She had the honeymoon period,” Ayers said.

“Those are two important groups that are likely to be the ones who the campaigns are going to be targeting very heavily throughout the campaign,” said Amy Walter, editor-in-chief of The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter. “That’s why this debate really matters, because [Harris] needs to get those independent and those Latino and other swing voters to be a more permanent part of her coalition.”

Harris leads Trump 49% to 48% among registered voters, showing a race that has tightened since August when Harris held a 3-point lead against Trump, according to an NPR/PBS News/Marist National Poll released Tuesday morning.

Among those who say they definitely plan to vote, the survey found Harris edging Trump by 3 points, 51% to 48%.

Trump, however, leads Harris among Independent voters 49% to 46% – a 14-point shift from August when Harris commanded an 11-point lead in a field that had multiple candidates, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the poll found.

The NPR/PBS News/Marist National Poll also showed Trump up with Latino voters 51% versus 47% for Harris, a 9-point swing since August.
