For over a century, Sweet Briar College in rural Virginia has been a legend among women’s schools, not least because a lady can bring her horse there (if she has a horse).

But now the school has another string to its bow, joining the very small list of women’s institutions that has officially declared that men will not be allowed to enter:

In a move that has upset students, alumnae and faculty, Sweet Briar College announced earlier this month that it was changing its admissions policy and will no longer accept [male] applicants.

The small women’s college in rural Virginia has never had an admissions policy specifically for [male] students but has evaluated and admitted [male] applicants on a case-by-case basis.

The new policy holds that an applicant must confirm ‘that her sex assigned at birth is female and that she consistently lives and identifies as a woman,’ according to Sweet Briar’s website.

“Assigned female at birth.”

In other words:

As I’m sure you’re aware, numerous girls’ schools have fallen to the transgender zeitgeist in recent years:

In some cases school officials have quickly backpedaled their transgender-friendly policies after major backlash:

But Sweet Briar’s policy change appears to have been proactive, driven not by fear of the mob but by a desire to keep their women’s-only college, well, you know … open only to women.

And the school isn’t being shy about it:

The new transgender policy stems from the Board of Directors’ interpretation of the founder’s will, which emphasizes that the 123-year old college was established for the education of ‘girls and young women.’ In a statement to the media, college officials noted that “political and other influences” have called ‘the meaning of the term ‘woman’ into question,’ but the board ‘understands the term [women] in its historic and traditional way consistent with the intentions of our founder.”

Big props to this school for speaking basic, simple, vital truth.
