Vice President Kamala Harris gave a speech to a group of high schoolers in Georgia on Thursday that supporters of former President Donald Trump have labeled as “cringe”-worthy.

On Wednesday, Harris, accompanied by her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, visited Liberty County High School in Hinesville, Georgia—a key battleground state that Democrats narrowly flipped blue for the first time in decades less than four years ago.

During the visit, the pair dropped in on a practice session by the school’s band, where Harris told students: “I was in a band when I was your age.” An aide said the VP had played the French horn, xylophone, and kettle drums, The Associated Press reported.

“Sometimes you hit the right note, sometimes you don’t. But all the practice makes for beautiful music, and that is symbolic for everything that you all will do in you lives,” Harris added.

Trump supporters were quick to mock Harris. “WARNING: CRINGE,” the Trump War Room X account said above a video of Harris’ speech. Others, meanwhile, criticized Harris for speaking to the high schoolers like they were young children.

“She always does this. She literally talks down to people because she believes she is the smartest person in the room,” wrote one X user. “Reality is, she is probably the dumbest person in the room.”

The visit is part of the Harris-Walz campaign’s strategy to gain traction in GOP strongholds and present a more personal, approachable side of the ticket, which remains relatively unfamiliar to voters. The campaign is also focusing on building support in regions beyond Atlanta and its suburbs, which played a key role in Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in Georgia, Newsweek reported.

Harris’ campaign communications director, Michael Tyler, said bus tours offer an “opportunity to get to places we don’t usually go (and) make sure we’re competing in all communities.”

Harris has spent the 35-plus days since being anointed as the Democratic Party’s nominee by President Joe Biden avoiding a sit-down media interview or a formal press conference, and she’s been roundly criticized for that.

This week, however, the VP’s campaign announced she had agreed to be interviewed by CNN’s Dana Bash — and that interview was aired Thursday evening on the network — but that arrangement quickly drew even more criticism after it was discovered that she would be bringing her running mate.

On Tuesday, CNN conservative commentator Scott Jennings criticized Harris for bringing Walz, arguing that this move highlights her perceived weakness as a candidate.

Jennings was participating in a panel discussion on the network with anchor Anderson Cooper, who raised the question of whether, after nearly 40 days without a single interview or press conference since Harris became the Democratic Party’s de facto 2024 nominee, critics would highlight her ongoing refusal to appear for an interview solo.

“Is the line now going to be, well, why isn’t she doing it by herself?” Cooper asked.

“Yeah, I do think people are going to bring that up,” Jennings replied, saying that while he had “great confidence” in both the network and anchor Dana Bash, he agreed it was not a great look for Harris to bring Walz along.

“I think it’s incredibly weak — weak sauce — to show up with your running mate. The fact that they don’t have enough confidence in her to let her sit, herself, the actual top of the ticket, and do a single interview …” Jennings continued. “I think the hand-wringing and gyrations over this over the last month show a troubling lack of confidence in her political ability. Which also makes you wonder as a voter, well, what kind of president would you be if this kind of a small-time decision — can we do an interview or not? — what does that look like for your decision-making process?”

“So yes, I think Republicans are going to think it’s pretty weak to show up with, effectively, someone to take up half the time,” Jennings concluded, referring to Walz in an X post as Harris’ “emotional support animal” for the interview.
