A longtime Fox News Channel host is considering a run for governor as a Republican in the blue state of California. He says he has no qualms about discussing the “uncomfortable” truths about how bad life has become there under Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and a Democratic supermajority in the state legislature.

The National Pulse reported that Steve Hilton, a former director of strategy for British Prime Minister David Cameron, is seriously considering a run for office in 2026, according to sources close to him.

Hilton, who served Cameron from 2010 to 2012 and hosted Fox News’s “The Next Revolution” from 2017 to June 2023, has recently shifted his focus to local California politics. He is particularly interested in issues such as homelessness and the state’s substantial $145 billion debt.

“He is thinking very seriously about running for governor, and he is doing it in a very organized way,” says former California Republican Party chairman Jim Brulte, told Politico.

Brulte, who also served as the Republican leader in the State Senate, added: “I know he’s talking to a lot of the right people because I have heard from a lot of the right people that he’s talking to them.”

Hilton has garnered notable interest from allies in Silicon Valley, particularly due to his public policy positions. Although Democrats have held the governorship since 2011, the worsening quality of life and affordability in the state has created a situation where unconventional candidates like Hilton could potentially resonate with voters.

“He is a no-BS person who cuts to the heart of issues no matter how uncomfortable the truth is,” tech industry billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya told Politico. He noted further: “I think that that could be really refreshing at the right moment in California.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic field to replace Gov. Newsom is expected to be crowded.

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, former Controller Betty Yee, and state Senator Toni Atkins will all be running alongside Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, who has already announced her intentions to do so.

Hilton focused on policy issues throughout his tenure at Fox. During a show segment in May 2022, Hilton argued that the baby formula crisis at the time was the latest example of President Joe Biden’s unfitness for office and that his “obvious inability to perform the duties of president properly” should have led to the removal of the “incapacitated” leader.

“Have you ever heard a weaker expression of resilience than that? That is the President of the United States of America, can’t even say the most basic thing without reading it off of a piece of paper,” Hilton began.

“Biden, mumbling and bumbling his way around Asia while here at home inflation soars, the stock market crashes, the border’s wide open, and the baby formula is now expected to last for months,” he added.

“More than Biden’s border crisis. more than Biden’s inflation crisis – both of those, the consequence of deliberate ideological choices – the Biden baby crisis proves beyond any doubt that this Biden regime, the whole rotten crew of Obama retreads, swamp time servers, and juvenile activists is totally unserious and completely incompetent,” he continued.

“Except, wait a minute, the crisis is now,” Hilton declared. “A few months ago when all these people started working diligently, there actually wasn’t a crisis, there was just a closed factory so somehow, these geniuses by working diligently managed to turn a closure into a crisis.”

“Their response to a sudden massive interruption to the supply of one of the most vital products imaginable for America’s families wasn’t to get the Michigan factory up and running, they’re saying that’s still weeks away,” he added, “it wasn’t to get extra supply from other U.S. producers, it wasn’t to try and find replacement supply from other countries, they continued to block imports for months, with massive tariffs and pointless regulations.”

“It wasn’t even to invoke the Defense Production Act they never stopped going on about during the pandemic,” Hilton said. “The Biden regime’s response they tell us was working diligently for months, and this is the result, panic, and despair for millions of families.”
