Former first lady Michelle Obama attacked Donald Trump during her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, imploring her party to “do something” to help elect Vice President Kamala Harris in November.

As she has a tendency to do, Michelle played the ‘race card’ early and often, sublimely accusing Trump — without evidence, as usual — of being a racist.

“Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us,”she said. “His limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working and highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black. I want to know who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those Black jobs,” she said.

Obama urged Democrats to stand strong in defending Kamala Harris from anticipated attacks over the next 11 weeks and to resist letting Republicans dictate the narrative. With President Joe Biden’s late exit from the race, Harris and her campaign face a tight deadline to introduce herself to voters and win over the crucial undecided voters who could determine the election’s outcome.

Obama, who said it was hard attending the convention due to her ongoing grief over her mother’s passing, had some of the strongest words for the former president during a night of veiled criticisms. Trump, a key figure in the birther conspiracy that questioned Barack Obama’s U.S. birthplace, was particularly targeted in her remarks.

“Look, it’s his same old con, his same old con, doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better,” she said.

“Going small is the opposite of what we teach our kids,” she said. “Going small is petty, it’s unhealthy, and quite frankly, it’s unpresidential.”

Obama also highlighted Harris’ middle-class background and shared a lesson from her single mother, who emphasized not just voicing concerns about problems but actively working to “do something” about them.

Harris “understands that most of us will never be afforded the grace of failing forward,” she claimed. “We will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth. If we bankrupt a business or choke in a crisis, we don’t get a second, third or fourth chance.”

Meanwhile — and notably — Harris and Walz were about 100 miles away from the DNC during Obama’s speech, hosting a rally in Milwaukee instead. Fox News reported that their absence from the convention on Tuesday was a strategic move to avoid the optics of Harris appearing alongside a figure Biden believes played a role in ending his re-election campaign.

“[The] Obamas are still not on the White House good side,” a source familiar with the situation told Fox News. “It would not be helpful to their relationships.”

“We are in tricky territory,” this source told the outlet.

Following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not seek re-election, Obama did not immediately endorse Harris. A source told CNN that Obama thought the Democratic Party needed to have a valid process by which delegates choose their next nominee.

In a video released earlier this month, the Obamas can be heard telling Harris they will support her.

“I can’t have this phone call without saying to my girl Kamala: I am proud of you. This is going to be historic,” Michelle Obama said.

“We called to say Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” former President Obama said following his wife.

The former president then called the vice president a “happy warrior.”
