A notable Democratic senator decided to bail on his party’s convention, which began Monday evening in Chicago.

Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania avoided the convention, which has already been marred by controversial protests, drawing the ire of many of his colleagues and long-time Democratic operatives.

“One of the great backstabbers in modern Democratic politics is John Fetterman, but I’m going to wait until after the election to deal with him,” Democrat strategist James Carville complained, as reported by One America News. “He’s somebody that must be dealt with and must be dealt with in real-time.”

It’s not clear what Carville meant by his remarks.

Fetterman’s shift is largely attributed to his support for Israel amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. His stance has drawn criticism from some prominent Democrats, who have voiced opposition to Israel’s actions and expressed solidarity with those in Gaza under Hamas control.

Democratic progressives have criticized Fetterman for not advocating a ceasefire in Gaza and for his comments against President Joe Biden’s potential decision to withhold weapons from Israel. Additionally, Fetterman’s communications director, Carrie Adams, has publicly stated her disagreement with his position on the Middle East conflict, OAN reported.

For his part, Fetterman said his decision was made on behalf of his family.

“I’ve got three young kids, and they’re out of school,” he told reporters. “That’s four days I can spend with my children.”

Despite having differing views on Israel from Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, Fetterman endorsed her at a Harris-Walz rally. He affirmed his support, stating that he is “all in for the next president.”

During an interview in April, Fetterman expressed disagreement with President Joe Biden’s position that the U.S. would not participate in an offensive operation against Iran, stating that he would never “capitulate to the fringe” of his party.

CNN host Jake Tapper asked the Democrat about reports saying that Biden informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a day earlier that the U.S. would refrain from engaging in any offensive operations against Iran.

“Do you think that’s the right call or should direct U.S. military action, as some of your colleagues in the Senate are suggesting? Should that be on the table?” Tapper asked.

“I don’t agree with that. I just think we should follow and have Israel back in the situation. I don’t agree with the president. That doesn’t change anything—he‘s a fantastic president. I‘m proud to stand with him, campaign for him, and vote for him,” he responded.

Tapper prompted Fetterman to address Sen. Marco Rubio’s remarks, where the Florida Republican criticized the White House for leaking information about the Biden-Netanyahu conversation, deeming it “offensive.” Rubio also suggested that such leaks indicated Biden’s attempt to “appease the far left in his party.”

“The president is entitled to his own views and whatever he decides to do. But I would never capitulate to the fringe. I’ll never pander to that as well. In fact, that empowers Hamas and Hamas — they’re actually convinced they’re winning the [public relations] war. And they’re never going to negotiate at this point. They think that they’re going to hold onto the very end,” Fetterman said.

“And I know why they’re not willing to provide any kind of proof of life. And I don’t know why there’s not more of that conversation in the media, like what about the hostages? What’s happened to them? Where are they now? And let’s just bring them home. And then all of the harsh words should be directed at Hamas, which started this. And now continues to hold all of over 100 Israeli hostages,” he continued.

The Pennsylvania Democrat went on to speculate that Hamas could bring the war to an end right away by simply releasing its hostages.
