President Joe Biden appeared to make a remarkable admission about why he decided to end his reelection campaign last month.

In an interview with CBS News correspondent Robert Costa, broadcast on Sunday, Biden seemed to claim that his decision was heavily influenced by several leading Democrats, which once again renewed claims from former President Donald Trump, Republicans, and even some Democrats that he was forced out in a sort of “coup.”

“Let’s begin with your decision. In late July, you are at your home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, with your family, and you make this historic decision. Tell me the story,” Costa began.

“Look, the polls that we had show it was neck and neck down to the wire. What happened was a number of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought that I was going to hurt them in the race. I was concerned if I stayed in the race that would be the topic. Why did Nancy Pelosi say, why did so-and-so say? I thought it would be a real distraction number one,” Biden began.

“Number two, when the first time I thought of myself as a transition president. I cannot even say how old I am it’s hard to get it out of my mouth. Things got moving so quickly, it did not happen. The combination was I thought it was a critical issue for me still maintaining this democracy. I thought it was important because although it was a great honor to be president, I have a obligation to the country to do the most important thing you can do. We must, we must defeat Trump,” he said

Costa responded: “I saw images of your family in the Oval Office sitting just over to your left as you addressed the nation. They came up to you after the speech, so what did you say to them?

“It’s what they said to me. My grandchildren call me pop, my children call me dad. And they said they were proud and that mattered.

Vice presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance, among others, said that President Joe Biden should step down from office after members of the Democratic Party convinced him to end his reelection bid over concerns about his mental acuity last month.

Vance, who former President Donald Trump chose to be his running mate on the first day of the Republican National Convention, said that if Biden cannot run for office due to cognitive concerns, he should not continue serving as president.

“Everyone calling on Joe Biden to *stop running* without also calling on him to resign the presidency is engaged in an absurd level of cynicism,” Vance wrote on the X platform. “If you can’t run, you can’t serve. He should resign now.”

In an address last month, however, Biden said he plans to serve out the duration of his term, which ends on Jan. 20, 2025.

During an Oval Office address on Wednesday, Biden told the American public that “the defense of democracy is more important than any title” and that he plans to serve the remainder of his term.

“I draw strength, and find joy, in working for the American people. But this sacred task of perfecting our union is not about me. It’s about you. Your families. Your futures. It’s about ‘We the People,’” Biden said.

“I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation,” Biden added.
